Βολόσυρος Εκτύπωση E-mail

Volosyros was a thick wooden platform with its front part raised like a sledge, and it was drawn by two oxen as shown in the picture. Long sharp quartz* stones were mounted on the surface of the platform that was in contact with the ground. The threshing floor was covered with wheat ears and oxen or donkeys would draw the volosyros platform on it in almost concentric circles. The farmer would stand or sit on the platform to guide the animals to the right direction stood, as well as to provide the weight necessary for the quartz sharp stones to better crush the wheat ears.

  • Quartz is silicon dioxide ( SiO2 ), a glassy mineral with quite high hardness of almost 7 which at the time was suitable for cutting grain ears.
